Be Inspired – Get the TED iPad App

Oh man! Am I so freakin’ excited! TED released the new TED iPad app yesterday and in short, my review is: AWESOME!. Last night I took some time to dive into this amazingly simple and beautiful app – it’s the most exciting app I’ve had in months (I needed something to knock Angry Birds off its pedestal). It delivers all those super cool TEDTalk videos in a slick and simple user interface. Thel iPad-only features for exploring, saving and watching make for a much improved experience from their website – if that’s possible.

I love the catalog of 800 TEDTalks. I love the time-centric custom play list. My fav is the “Inspire Me” light bulb in the lower-left corner which reveals videos by category. The app is free and can be downloaded through the App Store in iTunes. Best video watching experience on my iPad yet!

marketing fails contest

Our promotional partner Sayvee has kicked off a cool contest! Here’s a chance to channel those negative marketing thoughts, which we all have (kind of like I did with my promo fail post). The object is to create a video under 1 minute in length about a marketing fail of some kind. This can be a true story or a fictional / ridiculous idea. Videos can be in any style you want. (Examples: comic, drawing, you in front of a camera, re-enactments etc.). Be creative. It turns out I’m a judge so don’t hold back – I love the wacky stuff.

Creative Tools – Creative Live

This is the coolest thing since… well, EVER! Seattle’s Craig Swanson, and his superstar partner-in-crime creative director and photographer Chase Jarvis, launched the most amazing training platform in the world last month: CreativeLIVE – a live creative education internet channel bringing you and I top notch training at no cost.

Think about that for a second. Access to instructors and courseware that normally costs hundreds to thousands of dollars can now be enjoyed from the comfort of your own computer without spending a dime! Crazy I tell you!

So, for example – next week: May 11th there’s “Photoshop to HTML” by Erik Fadiman and May 12th is “Fundamentals of Digital Photography” by John Greengo. Later in May is “Android Java Apps” and “Watercolors 101″. Programming AND fine art? Yep. Where else can you get premium training that’s live, interactive, and can be experienced in your PJs!

And HEY! GUESS WHAT?! CREATIVEMIX’s very own David duChemin is leading a course in late June called Vision-driven Photography. If you’re the curious and/or untrusting type and you want to know what ‘the catch’ is… the not-free part is if you didn’t catch it live and you want to view the course after the fact, that part is pay to play. No problem.

The sign-up process is super simple and they are very respectful of your information; they use your email address to send you reminder emails with important class links on the day of the class. During the class you use GoToWebinar and you can ask questions in real-time! The classes are presented in the QuickTime format.

Creative Project – OnGray

“OnGray was a project that developed simply from the desire to do something random and creative with friends.” – Dave Delnea

Creative collaboration is a huge part of Delnea’s work. As a photographer and creative director he’s one of those true creatives, a real artist that loves playing and working hard at his craft. I’ve known Dave for about a year now and I can honestly say he’s brilliant, a real creative visionary. What stands out to me is that he doesn’t create in isolation – he’s always looking around to find collaborators.

The original concept behind OnGray was that Dave would get a few friends together and shoot a few pictures in front of a gray backdrop. It turns out a little vision goes a long way. As the idea developed it started to take on a bit of a vintage feel and soon involved stills, motion and a cast/crew of about 14 people. Dave’s posted the images in his Project Portfolio and there’s a fun behind the scenes video below too. I was involved at a production level – I’m the dork int he blue stripped sweater.

What I love about being around Dave is that he craves creative experiences in community. He’s passionate about getting to hang out with fun and brilliant creative people, being inspired by people with skill sets completely different from his own, and to be part of creating something that’s beyond what he ever could have come up with himself. If that doesn’t deserve a CREATIVEMIX shout-out I don’t know what does. You might remember Dave from last year’s CREATIVEMIX – he hosted the Photographer’s Den in the Exhibition. If you weren’t there then you have no idea what I’m talking about – but don’t feel bad. Nudge-nudge, wink-wink, know what I mean, eh? eh?.

A hipster bomb went off in Mount Pleasant! Oh man – the Tangents Art Show was tonight and it was a major hit! Great art, killer DJ, wicked room (Lifetime Space) all brought to you by Jeff Hamada (Booooooom.com) and the Lifetime Collective. We ran into some CREATIVEMIX peeps (like Dave Delnea) and enjoyed the commute to/from (a brisk walk just 5 blocks from our pad). Groovy Friday night out.

Designing Social Interfaces

idea2009logoI came across Cathy Bogaart’s blog post yesterday and if you’re an app builder of the social variety then you’ll want to check it out. She’s at the MaRS Centre in Toronto where IDEA2009 took place the day before – it’s a conference dedicated to social and experiential design. Bogaart wrote a quick-guide to Christian Crumlish‘s and Erin Malone‘s Designing Social Interfaces talk (they’re with O’Reilly Media). It has some great bits for those who dwell in the land of social-app creation (or even heavy users for that matter):

Five Principles of Successful Social Interfaces

Guidelines that you can apply to interpret any design “best practices” and make the specific decisions you need to make. Because every project is different.

1. Pave the cow paths. People don’t always go where you expect them to. Find out what they’re doing and then make that easier.

2. Talk like a person. This is a conversation. You are a human being and people like hearing from humans, not robots. Make it personal.

3. Be open. Play well with others.

4. Learn from games. Reputation or point systems make it fun.

5. Respect the ethical dimension. Making your idea or system viral should not mean spam. Because people hate spam. And they’ll hate you if you enable it.

Checkout ChangeThis, an online hub with one mission: to challenge the way important ideas are created and spread. It’s where you can find Hugh MacLeod’s “How to be Creative” manifesto. He’s offered up 26 tried-and-true tips for being truly creative (just download the PDF). MacLeod highlights the value of authenticity and hard work, and reveals the challenges and rewards of being creative. It’s the perfect remedy for jump-starting an idea, working out a concept, and flushing out the details.

Hugh MacLeod is a brand consultant, copywriter and cartoonist. Born in America but educated in the UK, he has spent most of his life shuttling between the two countries. Hot One Inch Action

hot action button 09-1Okay, let’s face it… buttons are cool. I remember collecting buttons when I was in elementary school and they were nowhere near as cool as they are today. Do you remember those really big ones? As a 10-year old I had these massive buttons from events like EXPO 86 and by my favourite pop stars like Corey Hart; I think I even had one of the A-Team… or was it Airwolf?

Buttons have evolved… big time, but thank goodness they’ve gotten smaller. And what’s really cool about living in this modern age of buttonness (fake word) is that anyone can make them! Artists and nerds, social activists and marketing wizards, anyone and everyone can make their own one-off button, a collectors series, or a gang-run of thousands. I had some made for the Camp Moomba Yogathon back in 2008 and they were so much fun to share and use as a conversation starter. Personally, I don’t wear them on my clothes but I like sticking them to a bag or on a cork board. I think a jean jacket is the ideal “canvas” for 1-inch buttons but I haven’t worn a jean jacket since 1988 (forgetting, of course, the denim relapse of 2003) so I’m not likely to start flashin’ the hot action at my next meeting any time soon.

Well, if you haven’t yet guessed where I was going with this… on October 22nd you’ll be able to make your own buttons at CREATIVEMIX! Chris Bentzen, from This is Plan B, will be bringing his button making magic to the Creative Exhibition so we can all get in on the action! How cool is that!

Special note: CREATIVEMIX is more than a conference, there will also be a Creative Exhibition which will be open to the public. Check-out the action from the 2008 event

Now, whether you’re an artist, a button-wearing junkie, or just a curious creative you’ll want to attend their big event coming up. Here’s the details:

They’re bringing together 50 artists, 50 buttons, and some hot button trading action with Vancouver’s hottest art audience. Conceived by Jim Hoehnle and Chris Bentzen in 2004, Hot One Inch Action is the original, one-night only show of art, music and social interaction.

The original work of fifty different artists will be chosen to be presented on one inch buttons. These one inch buttons are displayed on the gallery wall and the audience is offered the opportunity to buy randomly selected buttons in bags of five. If the bag purchased does not have the desired button, you are invited to trade with the people around you. How bad do you want that button?

Chris and Jim are now accepting submissions. It’s free to submit artwork and chosen artists receive 20 free copies of their button. Only one submission per artist. Check out details on hotoneinchaction.com. Submission deadline is Friday October 30 at noon.

July Mashup

jamble_product_imageOkay, don’t shoot me. I know it’s been awhile since my last post but I’ll make it up to you as this post is called the July Mashup as it features a number of bits (and bobs) that you’ll find groovy, cool, and creative gosh darnit.

First up – the mashup theme of this post has a not-so-hidden meaning. About 5 weeks ago we joined in the celebration of the launch of CREATIVEMIX’s very own Steve Rechtschaffner‘s latest project Jamble – an entirely new way to create and experience music on your iPhone or iPod Touch. Steve, and his No Robots Interactive team have knocked this little app out of the park!

The scoop is this: Jamble makes it super easy to whip-up wicked music mashups making you sound like a pro-DJ. Seriously – it’s really fun! At the launch party Eileen and I test drove Jamble and had an absolute riot! I stunk, Eileen’s got the skills though. If it wasn’t for the big 200-watt speakers I think I could have gotten the hang of it but I was way to self conscious. I was having the hardest time “spinning” The Pussycat Dolls and David Bowie without getting side tracked by Vanilla Ice (you know the song I’m talkin’ about) and my Gr.8 homeboy M.C. Hammer. Anywho – get the app – it’s crazy fun.

Next in line, in case you missed it, David duChemin’s new book Within the Frame is selling like crazy! His second book: Vision Mongers is set to come out this Fall. David’s wildly popular Pixelated Image Blog is a great addition to your RSS feed if you haven’t done so already.

If you’re a foodie, or an “eatie” then you’ll want to check-out The Dirty Apron Cooking School. The school opens August 12, 2009 and will be a premier culinary facility accessable to the average person. Here’s a little taste of what to expect:

The Dirty Apron Cooking School is Vancouver’s most exciting culinary playground.

It’s a place for amateur cooks, the curious and professionals alike to learn, explore, and unleash their inner chef.

It’s a joint venture between Karri and Nico Schuermans and former Chambar Sous-Chef David Robertson.

Two styles of classes are offered: hands-on and demonstration.

The demonstration classes are guided over two hours offering students a chance to watch, follow along, and then taste the results with the chef.

Both classes will be followed by a group dinner in the cooking school’s private dining room.

Some creative peeps of ours get a serious shout-out. Eoin Finn, Insiya Rasiwala, Karen Robertson, Judy Chambers, Saul Brown, Joan deVerteuil, and Jodi Carter gave rockin’ leadership and creative energy to the 7th annual Camp Moomba Yogathon & Blissfest. Eileen and I proudly produce Canada’s largest outdoor yoga event with these amazing people all in the name of raising awareness and support for the Western Canadian Pediatric AIDS Society. Oh… and big blessings to our charity main-man Luke Balson (Exec. Director).

Our friends (and fellow creative mixers) Stephen and Jane Cox are cookin’ up Volume #7 of Pecha Kucha Night Vancouver. The skinny is that they’re aiming for late August or early September. So keep an eye on the site for the details.

Be sure to swing by the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery July 27 — August 9 to see Concepts to Draw Upon (drawings by Laura Bell, Aron Hill, Marianne Lovink, Jennifer Stead, and Reece Terris). This amazing gallery is in Yaletown (on Homer Street, between Helmecken and Nelson). The exhibition offers a fresh look at birds, microscopic organisms and large scale forests. Of special interest is a collection of Terris’s architectural renderings of scaled apartments from the decade of the 1960s to the year 2000. It’s a great space and continually has great exhibits. A must see.

Look at Me I’m a Cartoon!

Find your inner illustrator, build an animated representation of yourself, tell stories, or just have fun making random drawings; Do-it-Yourself comics is the name of the game at Pixton.com.

Creator Clive Goodinson, and his Vancouver-based Pixton Comics Inc., is a leading developer of innovative social media applications. They’ve launched a killer website that every social media user should check-out. The quick scoop is this: it’s free, the comics are viewable to non-users, they’re sharable, and the DIY web-app is absolutely the coolest thing ever! It’s a perfect tool for those of us who can’t draw worth a darn.

The feature that seems to get a lot of action is “remix”. Your friends can add onto your comic without screwing up your original build – how great is that! The idea of building comics in community is pretty cool.

What’s really got my attention as of late is their education campaign:

“Pixton for Schools, a private, virtual classroom that integrates their award-winning comic creation software in a fun web-based learning environment. Pixton for Schools lets teachers and students create, publish, and share their own comics – without having to draw. A powerful and intuitive comic editor makes it easy to design characters, insert props, and add speech bubbles – all within the comic pane. Characters can be articulated, their facial expressions changed, and attributes such as hair and clothing style selected, simply by clicking and dragging.” Read more at Pixton.com.

Creatives at Large – Chase Jarvis

CREATIVEMIX is a Vancouver-focused conference. That’s right. It’s not for everyone. It’s not that we’re trying to be exclusive (well, we are, but we have good reasons) it’s just that we’re focused on community, face-to-face relationships, and the collaboration that comes from living in proximity to other creative people. As a result, the majority of the content posted on this blog features local idea makers, news on creative events, and some fun bits about life as a creative person living in Vancouver. However, from time to time we’ll blog about people, places, and things from outside metro Vancouver – we’ll be categorizing these items as Creatives at Large.

To get this party started we need not look far, just south of the boarder in fact, to Seattle where photographer and director Chase Jarvis dwells. I’d like to say I know Chase but I don’t. I know Chase by extension; so extended in fact he doesn’t even know who I am. But, he’s a friend of a friend (our very own David duChemin) and from the moment David told his first “Chase story” I couldn’t help but add his blog to my RSS feed and make plans to keep tabs on this guy. There’s not much I need to say about him other than this: he gets it. He’s a “creativemixer” (new word, just made it up) and so I want to send a “shout out” to him, a fellow West Coast creative. Here – read Chase’s bio and you’ll get a sense of why this guy is uber-cool and easily fits into the Creatives at Large category:

I haven’t swashbuckled with pirates, nor have I swam the English Channel. I haven’t even been to Antarctica. But I have traveled to many far away places, created a lot of still and moving pictures for myself and others. And I’ve made it my life’s goal to be as creative as possible toward everything I endeavor. Outside of my morning cereal, that is.

I don’t always make my bed, but lazy I’m not. On a deserted island, I’d go insane without photography, film, music, my wife Kate and our family pets. Storytelling, creative innovation, and visual voodoo-no matter the medium-make my heart go thump thump; and sharing all this online with the world, plus as much of my professional experience as I can muster, makes my soul sing. I’m fond of crows, and love that they’ll fly toward anything shiny. I feel like a crow on most days. I can find humor in anything. I’m still working on that.

I’ve won a boatload of awards for my work, and I’m grateful for every single one of them, but I’ve always been unsure of whether I earned them or whether somebody I knew, or somebody who knew somebody I knew, rigged the jury. I was transparent long before it was hip to be so, and I believe deeply in teamwork, community, and collaboration. Let’s be friends. Better yet, let’s swim the English Channel.

Behind it All

Well… the cat is out of the bag about CREATIVEMIX – Vancouver’s first annual ideation conference and the response has been great so far! 2,100+ visitors to the site and registration is gaining momentum. Phewph. Turns out we’re not totally crazy!

Now, before going any further, I just want to make sure you know who is behind the vision and direction of the conference, as well as the content posted on this blog. So, who are we? We are proud Vancouverites and local creatives who passionately seek the company of, and inspiration from, other creative types – people who, like us, are driven by their inspiration and “must” pursue their ideas and find a way to make their living doing what they love (or desire to). We believe that, as we grow in our creative efforts and delve deeper into our own artistic crafts, we must also expand horizontally to gain new relationships with, and understanding from, creative people of disciplines other than our own. This is our heart and the core reason for hosting CREATIVEMIX; we want to take our creativity to the next level and believe that we are not alone.

We are Corwin Hiebert and Eileen Rothe. By the time October 22nd comes around, we will have been married for 13 years. Though I’m pretty sure we can’t self-proclaim the status of “Power Couple,” we definitely live our lives in such a way that we plan for, and expect to, work together on nearly every project. We co-birthed and are co-producing CREATIVEMIX, and we are extremely excited to champion other local creatives and gather together like-minded Vancouverites this Fall. Here’s a little snapshot on each of us:

Specializing in strategic event design, marketing, and logistics management, Corwin has 14 years of experience in the event industry and has handled near every kind of event, from international road shows to local fundraisers. A one-time consultant to the largest software company in the world, Microsoft, he managed over 300 international training events in under four years. Some of his local events include the Western Canada’s largest yoga event, the “Camp Moomba Yogathon,” supporting Canadian children impacted by HIV/AIDS, the Hoop-Law Charity Basketball Tournament, and the upcoming 2009 GEOWEB conference. Corwin is also the manager for Wade Imre Morissette (kirtan performer/yoga instructor/author) and David duChemin (photographer/author).

Eileen Rothe

Eileen Rothe

Eileen is singer/songwriter with a piano-driven style and a soulful, edgy voice. She’s been graciously compared to the likes of Kate Bush and Tori Amos but has her own unique je ne sais quoi. Over the past couple of years, Eileen has been extremely fortunate to work with renowned vocal coach Judith Rabinovich (known for her work with Sarah McLachlan) and continues to pursue excellence in her music. Her debut EP “Dream Girl” (Hipposonic Records) has the magical touch of producer Jeff Dawson (John Wozniak, Holly McNarland, Daniel Powter) and mixer Mike Fraser (Aerosmith, AC/DC, Rush) and in the spring of 2008 she ventured out on her first Canadian tour that took her from Vancouver to Ottawa. Early this year Eileen travelled to New York, as she was invited to audition for a roadway musical – this has thrown her into a new and challenging direction in her career and she is very excited about it. She is also working on new material and is back in the studio this summer.

So there it is. Sorry for the self-promo . . . I just couldn’t come up with any other way to introduce ourselves. Maybe I should have had someone interview us – though that sounds even more presumptuous, don’t you think? Droppin’ the Creative Bomb

booooooom_logoNo, don’t run for cover. There’s no immediate threat – unless you don’t have a creative bone in your body, which we seriously doubt. Just be sure to keep an eye on the creative bomb of a blog called BOOOOOOOM.

Vancouver’s Jeff Hamada, designer and creative cheerleader, curates an amazing blog full of dangerously cool and creative people, images, ideas, projects, and stories. When speaking at Pecha Kucha Night Vancouver – Volume #6 he revealed his own art (mostly from his childhood – the Stegosaurus wearing jeans playing the saxophone was our favourite) and told some great stories about connecting and collaborating with creative people all over the world through his blog.

BOOOOOOOM is truly an inspiring site to click through but one shouldn’t stop there. Participating in the creative mayhem is highly encouraged and is a ton of fun, so don’t click and run – join in! Our recommendation is: haul out the RSS artillery and sign-up for duty. So, here’s a shout out to Jeff and his WMC (Weapon of Mass Creativity) BOOOOOOOM.

Creative People in Business

fastcompany_100creativesThe June issue of Fast Company Magazine features a very interesting list you’ll want to check out: 100 Most Creative People in Business.

Clearly such a list begs the question “according to whom?” since the subjectivity and bias of lists like these usually renders them predictable and useless. As well, magazines often use TOP lists as an excuse to get as many famous people on their pages as possible in order to generate sales. Both of these indiscretions are just not cool when it comes to creative people and so this list deserves a critical eye.

Believe it or not Fast Company got it right on this one (almost). The editors and staff did a pretty good job keeping the “who’s who” out and focused on people behind the people; which gets them props for sure. Though it’s not hard to lead-off with Apple, Chuck Salter’s snapshot of creative superhero (#1) Jonathan Ive, Senior Vice President of Industrial Design, is clearly a great start. Anyone who contributes so much to the success of a brand and its products and then calmly steps aside to let Steve Jobs bask in the glory belongs on such a list. Besides, Ive’s started in that role at the age of 29… all you can say is WOW.

A couple others stood out. Facebook’s Dave Morin, Senior Platform Manager, sits amoung good company (#16) with his evangelistic approach to the discussion of open-identity standards – which is cool. Morin is a creative guy who’s helping his and many other companies, and that makes him a solid addition to the roster for sure. And despite his fame and fortune, J.J. Abrams (#14) should get all the praise in the world for the way he warps time and puts the adventure back in action television and injects mystery into car chase movies.

There seems to be only a couple blips on the radar when it comes the list and they both get bad marks for two very different reasons. (#18) Susan Athey, Chief Economist at Microsoft, is being hailed for her adult-oriented questions about designs’ affect on the platform. No wow there. The few words written about her leave you wondering if they were looking harder than they should have in order to drop a Microsoft bigwig onto the list. Just because she’s asking good questions doesn’t quite make her a creative business person. That being said, Microsoft seems to be working hard on reinventing themselves so we’ll give her a little slack assuming we’ll hear more from her very soon. The amount of praise Fast Company heaps on Tyra Banks (#49) is a bit awkward. Sure she’s got herself quite the fashion media empire but her “hyperactive hand in creating” her world seems to justify adding her to the Top 100 Divas list. Again, maybe she deserves the credit; creativity does come in all kinds of crazy, Fast Company just didn’t provide much evidence on this one.

creativemix-logo_90xIt’s been a long time in coming but it’s finally here: registration is now open for CREATIVEMIX (Vancouver’s Ideation Conference) taking place October 22, 2009 at the Roundhouse Community Arts Centre in Vancouver, BC. All you creative peeps who normally wait until the last minute will definitely miss out on this one if you don’t sign-up early so be sure to register quick (and save $20 before September 15). Here’s the scoop on who this event is for, why it’s happening, and why it will be a one-of-a-kind conference:

CREATIVEMIX is a gathering of Vancouver’s emerging and professional creative minds. This one-day conference is dedicated to those who live and breathe ideation, creative expression, and believe the notion that inspiration is the most important asset. This conference is an interdisciplinary event, bringing together industry-leading idea makers who will share their experiences and explore a common thread of creativity.

This conference is for everyone who depends on their creative output – whether it’s a small or big part of their work. The goal is to help you take your creativity to the next level! We believe that the next level can be achieved through the collaboration and inspiration that comes from learning and working outside the box.

So often “creatives” gather to hone their technical craft; however, skills are simply not enough. It’s one thing to plan and deliver on a great idea but it’s the innovator who stands apart from the crowd. By leaving your skills at the door and focusing on expanding your creativity you’ll gain inspiration and a new mindset around this invaluable medium.

The program will consist of 12 speakers, from various industries, speaking to how they foster and manage creativity, fan new ideas into fruition, and promote the cross-pollination of creative concepts among different types of people and projects.

WTF Redefined

wtfcoverCREATIVEMIX speaker, and Vancouver’s very own, David duChemin has released his first book and let’s just say that WTF is an appropriate response to its success. Yeah – the shortname ranks high on the provocative list but that’s not what’s getting everyone’s attention. Within the Frame: A Journey of Photographic Vision is a powerful book that has a lot to say about the how-to of photography which is only the beginning. David has delivered an epic book that goes deep into the why. He inspires the pro (and the not-s0-pro) to find and express their vision photographically, specifically where people, places, and culture are concerned. PeachPit released the book just a couple weeks ago and the response has tripped the WTF radar when it comes to sales. Though still in the infancy stage of landing on shelves online sales at Amazon.com are through the roof.

The popularity of David’s blog PixelatedImage and his fast-growing Twitter community has propelled staggering feedback and book sales.  Follow him for just a few days and you’ll see that he’s clearly an exceptional writer, skilled communicator, lover of the craft, and coach for all kinds of “creatives”.
