Ethical Donut You Say?

Friday, October 29th, 2010

It’s official. Ethical Bean is to cool for school. They now serve donuts! I ran into Katie (the baker boss) at their East Van HQ to pick-up some loot for the conference and was treated to a fresh, yummy, pumpkin donut. It was covered in sugar! I love it when tasty food stuff is covered in sugar! I ate it to quick to dunk though, sorry Dad. They’ve got great flavours and they’re snack-sized which is good. Katie and Michelle have confirmed that Ethical Bean donuts will be available at CREATIVEMIX on Thursday – which is awesome. This is just another example of how really cool people are going out of their way to get involved and are making this event stand out.

The crew at Ethical Bean are great. They’re the nicest bunch of people. We go way back – at least 3 years (that’s a long time in Vancouver). Last year they included me in an early morning round of cupping (coffee tasting) – it was an unbelievable experience. Today, as I sipped by espresso and enjoyed my pumpkin treat, Katie and I  joked about how funny it would be if donut making got as serious as coffee roasting. There could be international events held in the motherland (Ontario, or any state in the Mid-West). There would be donut makers from around the world showcasing their finest. There would be judges, scorecards, spit buckets (or plop buckets – cuz’ you’d have to use your tongue to push the donut mush out), and trophies awarded to best of the best. It could be a dignified as wine tasting in no time.

I digress.

Thanks guys!

Helping Us Say Thanks

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

This is a quick shout out to three of our supporters who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Our friends at Opus Framing & Art Supplies, Libre Tea, and Ethical Bean are helping us say ‘thanks’ to our amazing volunteers this year. The people behind these awesome companies are generous and kind and our partnership in this event is invaluable. We’re pretty militant about thanking people around here and they all jumped at the chance to lend their support of CREATIVEMIX 2010 and the people who make it happen. They’ve gone above and beyond the call of duty and have donated some really nice items for our volunteer gifts. So… I’m thanking them for helping us thank our team. Thanks again.

Ethical Bean Coffee

Turn to Page 14

Monday, October 11th, 2010

Just a quick shout out to our amazing partners The Roundhouse – CREATIVEMIX is on page 14 of the Fall/Winter program guide. We think that’s totally awesome! The Roundhouse is a beautiful venue and is a perfect fit for our conference; we’re just so darn glad for their involvement. So, if you’ve got your hands on one of those mags then be sure to turn to page 14, made a big nodding motion with your head and say “Mmmmmm… interesting!” really loud.

Ethical Choice for your Coffee App

Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

If you’ve got iPhone then you’ve probably got a lot of apps – but what about one for your coffee?

Well, how about this for a little creative story-telling (and a clever marketing tool)! Our friends at Ethical Bean Coffee have gone hi-Tech when it comes to their packaging. Ethical Bean Coffee latest coffee packaging and design is absolutely unbelievable! Each bag of coffee is equipped with its own unique 2D barcode which can be scanned using a free Ethical Bean iPhone app or entered manually on their website.

This crazy-cool feature gives us the opportunity to watch interviews with farmers, look up cupping notes and roast profiles, and Google Map each bag’s beans down to the exact field they were grown in, all from the grocery aisle. Awesome!

In a market that is flooded with ‘fair-trade-washing’ I really like this idea because it shows a whole new level of transparency and it provides me with an interesting story about the beverage I take nearly as seriously as communion (multiple times a day to… don’t read into that to much).

I know what you’re thinking, that it’s over the top. Well, hold on there techno-bum, we’re already label-conscious, why not be source-conscious? And why not make it as easy as possible? I get it, and I like it.

Wanna go for coffee? There’s an app for that.

24 Hours x 24 Hours

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

24hrs-Van-CreativeMix-x-200CREATIVEMIX is almost here! In just 24 hours Vancouver’s Ideation Conference will be underway and it’s shaping up to be an amazing day!

24 Hours Vancouver has published a piece on the conference (page 5) — just look for my pensive “Sssshhhhh… I’m thinking!” headshot — and it’s a great piece about the event. Terry McBride drops some very encouraging words and it really gets the vibe across.

So there it is. Creative math. 24 x 24 = October 22. Ha! I’m hilarious.

Okay, now let’s get on with it! Eileen and I have lived, breathed, and bled this thing and with one day left we can honestly say that we’re crazy-excited to see this event come to life. Bringing together Vancouver’s creatives in a “meeting of  the minds” is one of those never-quite-completed tasks, but we’re having a blast doing it! Yes, we “think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship.” At this point, all I can think about is the Think & Drink.

Think & Drink Beer

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

sleeman_beer_bottles-2Sponsor Update: We’re proud to announce that Sleeman Breweries is now a sponsor of the CREATIVEMIX Think & Drink! Thanks to Sleeman there will be a whack load of choice when it comes to choosing the right beer to drink (don’t worry, thinking is not required – you can point and grunt if need be); the following cold ones will be available in the MIX Lounge: Cream Ale, Original Draught, No.20, and Sleeman Light.

The reception is at 4:45pm, after the last session, and is for conference participants and exhibitors only. The MIX Lounge is in the centre of the Exhibition Hall and will be a great place to wrap-up the day. Wine and special coffee will also be available.
